Hello everyone out there! Although I do love the summers in Ann Arbor and water skiing on the lakes of northern Michigan, I am writing to you from the sunny city of Los Angeles! I was fortunate enough to garner a summer internship out here with ESPN in the studio production unit. I made my way out here mid-May, spent a weekend getting settled in, and started on May 21. I have to be honest, I was definitely overwhelmed on my first day at the downtown office, but that quickly disappeared with the outpouring of help from the staff around me and the necessity to meet deadlines.
Here at the LA office, the main show we produce is SportsCenter, which is a great show to learn how to cut for because there are a lot of different things going on. The location of the office is also in prime real estate -- right next to the Staples Center where the LA Kings just won the Stanley Cup!
I observed a lot during my first week here. I learned how to run the prompter and even cut my first of many short pieces for the evening show. I am now in the middle of my fourth week, and although I have learned more than I ever thought possible, there is still a lot more!
One of the best feelings is seeing something you have created appear on the show. To know that you helped put together this hour-long masterpiece (yes, I call it a masterpiece because there are a whole lot of things that go into it!) is a unique feeling. I'll share more details on that later.
As soon as I arrived, I got my fair share of heat for being a Michigan student, but overall the environment has been perfect for learning and growing as an editor and a person. I have found my groove with a yoga studio near my apartment, an AMAZING farmers market, the beach, hiking, and numerous healthy restaurants (I am coming back with many new recipes to try!). It is a little harder to find soccer fields to train on here in LA, but I guess that is just because I have been spoiled with the Michigan Soccer Stadium right in my back yard these past few summers.
